General Electric’s U25B: A Bold Opening
It was an audacious move for General Electric to take on the domestic diesel electric locomotive market at time when North American railroads had completed their transformation from steam and the continent was in the grip of an economic recession. GE’s U25B was pitched as a reliable high horsepower road locomotive, intended to outshine offerings by EMD and Alco. Hunter Hughson’s clinic will provide a survey of the U25B with particular attention to the Penn Central fleet and a detailed review of the new Rapido model.
